Phillips, the fraternity started as a local organization but soon expanded to other colleges due to opposition from existing fraternities.

According to Founder William L., these badges were believed lost for nearly 20 years before being rediscovered. This tale, reminiscent of a Ripley or Hix-style 'Strange As It May Seem' story, showcases the fraternity's rich history and the determination of its founders.

Throughout its early years, Sigma Phi Epsilon experienced rapid growth, adding four chapters in one session alone. The Grand Council decided to limit new chapter openings to larger colleges and universities due to this rapid expansion. On October 22, 1902, the fraternity obtained a charter from the State of Virginia, marking a significant milestone in its history.

Sigma Phi Epsilon's original intention was to remain a local organization, but the opposition it faced at Richmond College spurred the founders to expand beyond their home institution. Today, the fraternity has chapters across the United States, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.

The fraternity has continued to grow and thrive over the years, with notable achievements including being named a '5 Star Fraternity' at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2013, the chapter won the Excelsior Cup for Academics and the Grand Chapter Scholarship Cup. The chapter's academic excellence is evident in its high GPA, with an average of 3.14 and a consecutive streak of highest GPA on campus for five semesters.

Sigma Phi Epsilon has also had its share of challenges and setbacks. In 2013, the fraternity elected to withdraw the charter of its Illinois Beta chapter at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, closing it after over 70 years of continuous existence. The chapter was re-chartered in 2020, but the Gold Buchanan Cup Charter was revoked in 2021.
